Exercising outdoors increases our exposure to sunlight, which in turn promotes the production of vitamin D, which is linked to improved mood, bone structure and immune system.
No wonder people in sunny cities like Barcelona are always looking for new places to work out in the open air.
Here is my list of favourite places to work out in the Catalan capital:
Platja del Somorrostro : a holiday feeling
Until the middle of the 20th century, this part of the city was in fact a slum. The beach has since changed and now welcomes tourists from all over the world.
The beach is quieter than its neighbour La Barceloneta and is ideal for exercising and enjoying the sea air.
There are lawns, free sports facilities and free beach volleyball courts in the area.
Access by metro: Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica stop (L4)
Carretera de les Aigües : to take in the view
If you want to run while enjoying the best views of Barcelona, the Carretera de les Aigües is the place for you! With the whole city at your feet, you can enjoy an almost flat dirt road. It is a very popular route for runners and cyclists.
There are several paths, but I recommend the main road for a better view.
Access by metro: Access by metro is difficult, but the S1 and S2 train lines pass close to the main access points.
Access by car, taxi: The easiest and most comfortable way. There are several car parks where you can leave your car at different access points.
Parque de la Ciudadela : For busy city dwellers
The Ciutadella Park (17,000m2) is one of the most popular green spaces in the city. Thanks to its central location with easy access (accessible by all public transport), and its large green spaces, it is an excellent choice for a quick session.
With trees and grass for a soft landing, it's also a great place to try slacklining. The park also has several free table tennis tables.
Access by metro:
Arc de Triomf stop (L1)
Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica stop (L4)
El Parc Fluvial del Besòs : Pefect for yoga
This river park stretches for over 9 km along the Besòs River.
With lawns and cobbled paths perfect for walking and cycling, it also has some excellent off-centre spots for practising yoga.
Access by metro:
Bon Pastor stop (L9N - L10N)
Verneda stop (L2)
Baró de Viver stop (L1)
